NICTD Double Track Project

Double-track rail infrastructure along the South Shore Line as part of the NICTD Double Track project, expanding capacity and improving commuter rail service in Northwest Indiana.

The NICTD Double Track Project is a $650 million infrastructure investment in Northwest Indiana that added 16.9 miles of second track to the South Shore Line (SSL) between Gary and Michigan City, completing a 26.6-mile double-tracked corridor. Completed in May 2024, it improved service with 14 new weekday trains, reduced travel times, and upgraded stations.
